Emergency Shelter Support Worker
Program Overview:
Stepping Stone is a community-based agency that believes in the Housing First philosophies and practices. We strive to improve the quality of life for people who are struggling with chronic homelessness, significant mental health issues and substance misuse. Our Emergency Overnight Shelter Program provides individuals a place to stay overnight and staff support 365 days a year.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Management Team, the Emergency Shelter Support Worker is a reliable, emotionally intelligent, responsible, energetic individual who is able to work as a team to support the individuals accessing our Overnight Emergency Shelter. This position is to provide coverage for the Overnight Emergency Shelter from the hours of 8:00pm-8:00am.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Experience providing individualized support services
- Experience of working with those who have experienced mental health challenges, addictions and trauma
- Respectful, supportive and engaging approach to persons with physical disabilities, addictions, mental health and other life challenges
- Liaison with local emergency and mental health services (ie. CMHA, police services, EMS, Here 24/7)
- Must have exemplary emotional intelligence, communication, conflict management, organization and problem solving skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, etc.)
- Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members
- Experience working within a non-profit and/or social services environment preferred
- Ability to work sensitively and effectively with people from various abilities, life situations and cultural backgrounds
- Current First Aid / CPR certification, Naloxone training and Vulnerable Sector Police Check or willingness to obtain at hiring
Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform intake for those accessing the shelter
- Connect with and support individuals accessing the shelter
- Engage with shelter guests in meaningful support manner
- Engage participants in navigating community resources pertaining to financial and overall well being
- Ensure a safe and clean environment for both staff and those accessing shelter including both within the building and the perimeter
- Engage in rapport building with individuals while doing on the floor tasks such as meal delivery and bed checks
- Expertly de-escalate conflict and manage behavioural concerns to ensure a safe environment for all staff and participant
- Act as a first responder to medical emergencies / crisis to ensure client wellbeing and navigate emergency services to respond
Working Environment / Schedule:
- Flexibility to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings and weekends
- Work with clients and staff directly on the shelter site
- Exposed to stress due to dealing with clients in difficult personal circumstances
